    Project Concept

From January 2010, the Zambian Conservation Farming Unit (Z-CFU), in conjunction with Participatory Approaches for Integrated Development (PAFID), established a Conservation Agriculture (CA) pilot project in Kenya. The purpose was to increase productivity and food security as well as improve soil management and fertility. The initial response surpassed targets by 14 % and a growing interest is evident from recent field days, with up to 200 farmers in attendance.

In July 2010, with funding from the Royal Danish Embassy, Kenya, Wajibu MS, in close collaboration with WAF/ICRAF Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS) scientists, implemented phase 1 of a project that:

  • Enables assessment of existing below and above ground carbon stocks;
  • Provides project developers with reduced monitoring and evaluation costs;
  • Provides project financiers with proven carbon/ecosystem resource credits;
  • Offers added value to community implementation of programs that enhance the environment.

By combining the successes of these initiatives, this project aims to build food security, establish environmental best practices, and increase opportunities for communities to reduce economic inequalities.
